The Literary and Scientific Institute – Tim Connor’s Tribute to Bridport’s Past

Have you ever considered the history of the Literary and Scientific Institute? Architectural historian Dr. Tim Connor has taken on the task of re-enlightening our town to the varied, rich and often surprising history of one of Bridport’s most illustrious cornerstones in his new book, The Literary and Scientific Institute. Catalysed by the recent restoration of the magnificent building, Tim explores the past of an institute that started as a hub for mechanics in 1833, before becoming a canteen for World War II troops, and then a library. Detailing the winding story that led it to become the Grade II* listed building it is today, we walk through the history of the heart of our town.

Tim will be speaking on his new book at a wonderful illustrated talk for BridLit, hosted in the LSI itself! The building now stands, renovated by Lottery money and that of passionate donors, as a monument to its own past. Hosting workspaces, meeting rooms, a permanent office, an evening venue for presentations and talks such as this, and a fantastic café, the Literary and Scientific Institute is where it is today thanks to where Bridport has (and hasn’t) been in the last two centuries.

Come and learn about the town we hold dear, and the monuments to moments in history we walk past daily.
